The long-awaited Queen documentary The Show Must Go On: The Queen + Adam Lambert Story made its major debut on April 29 on ABC. Fans got a sneak peak behind the frontman who revitalized the legendary band in the 21st century.
In a clip debuted on Monday’s episode of Good Morning America, Adam Lambert and his mother, Leila, look back on his childhood, where they say a star was born. “When Adam was younger, he didn’t quite fit in,” Leila said. “He would do a lot of acting out of fantasy things, and he would ask me to film him and take pictures while he was dancing or singing. We thought, ‘There’s got to be another outlet.’”
Lambert’s parents decided to put him in a children’s theater group, where the star says he truly discovered his love for performing. “I remember the first Saturday I went, I was instantly like ‘I found my people,’” he said, interspersed with clips of him performing in various shows.
Leila Lambert revealed that it wasn’t until after taking Adam in for voice lessons that they discovered his massive singing talent in a production of Fiddler on the Roof. Adam, meanwhile, says that his love of theater helped him overcome his own inhibitions. “As a strange kid, who was kind of ashamed of his body, and in the closet and a whole list of other insecurities, having something that I was good at and that got me a lot of attention, became sort of medicine for me.”
