Seven dogs from a village in northeastern China turned a nightmare into an internet sensation this week. Stolen from their homes and loaded onto a truck headed for the dog meat trade, the group broke free and walked more than 10 miles back to safety.

They stuck together the whole way, even when one of them could barely keep up. The footage has racked up over 230 million views online, and people everywhere are still talking about what these pups did.

How the Dogs Ended up on the Road in the First Place

The seven dogs lived in the same village near Changchun in Jilin province. They came from three different households but spent their days roaming together as neighborhood pals.

On March 16, thieves working for a dog meat operation grabbed them and crammed them into an illegal transport truck.

No one saw exactly how they got out. Volunteers from a local stray dog rescue group later pieced together that the dogs must have escaped somewhere along the route. Instead of splitting up in the chaos, they formed a tight pack and started heading home.

Watch the video below.

Over the next two days, they covered roughly 17 kilometers, or about 10.5 miles, through fields and along busy highways. They faced traffic, strange surroundings, and exhaustion, yet they never scattered.

The group included a mix of breeds: a German shepherd, a corgi, golden retrievers, Labrador types, and a Pekingese.

They knew the way back because they had explored the area together before. Their shared history as village friends gave them an edge that kept them moving as one unit toward familiar ground.

The Moment a Passerby Captured the Pack on Video

A driver named Lu spotted the dogs on March 16 while traveling the Changchun highway. He pulled out his phone and recorded them walking in a line along the side of the road.

The short clip quickly landed on Chinese social media and then spread worldwide after it appeared on YouTube channels like RIZUKO0011.

In the footage, the corgi stays out front the entire time. He keeps glancing back over his shoulder to check on the rest of the group.

Whenever anyone lags, the little dog slows the pace or circles back. The others follow his lead without question. Larger dogs stay clustered in the middle, creating a protective circle around one member who clearly needs extra help. That member is the German shepherd.

He limps noticeably from an injury to his leg, possibly hurt during the theft or the escape. The rest of the pack adjusts their speed so he can stay with them. They surround him on all sides, shielding him from traffic and keeping him from falling behind.

The video shows the group pausing several times to let the injured dog catch up before continuing forward together.

Viewers zoomed in on those details right away. The corgi’s constant checks and the protective formation around the German shepherd stood out as clear signs of teamwork. Within hours the clip had millions of views, and shares poured in from across China and beyond.

The Safe Return and the Bigger Conversation It Started

By March 19, all seven dogs had reached their village. Volunteers confirmed the group made it back to their three original households.

Each dog had only minor injuries and showed signs of fatigue but nothing serious. Owners reported the pets seemed relieved to be home and quickly settled back into their routines.

One volunteer from the Bitter Coffee Stray Dog Base told local media that the dogs’ return felt like a small win in a tough situation. The story has now pushed many people in China to talk openly about stronger animal protection rules.

The fact that the dogs were taken for the meat trade added weight to those calls, and the viral video gave the issue a face that millions could connect with.

The seven dogs have become local celebrities in their village. Their owners say the pack still roams together, just like before. The footage continues to circulate, reminding viewers that animals can show remarkable loyalty when they face hardship as a team.

This real event from a Chinese highway has left a lasting mark online, not because of any special tricks or training, but because seven ordinary dogs chose to look out for one another all the way home.
