In show business, a name is not just a name; it is a brand, an identity, and sometimes, a new beginning. It is, therefore, not uncommon for celebrities to change their names, a practice often seen as a rite of passage and as old as Hollywood itself.

From iconic figures like Elton John to contemporary stars like Miley Cyrus, many famous personalities have adopted names that differ from those they were given at birth. But why do celebrities change their names?

Whoopi Goldberg

Whoopi Goldberg’s name is as distinctive and vibrant as her persona. Born Caryn Elaine Johnson, she chose a stage name that would stand out as much as her performances. The name “Whoopi Goldberg” is not only memorable but also a reflection of her unique journey and identity.

Known for her iconic dreadlocks, warm smile, and incisive humor, Goldberg has carved out a significant place for herself in Hollywood. Her roles span the comedic to the dramatic, and as an African-American actress, she has been a trailblazer in the industry.

Goldberg once recounted that during her early days on stage, quick bathroom breaks were a luxury she couldn’t afford. This led to some natural, albeit embarrassing, moments that earned her a comparison to a whoopee cushion.

Embracing this bodily function, she adopted the name “Whoopi.” The last name “Goldberg” is not just a part of Whoopi Goldberg’s stage identity. It is a reflection of her multifaceted heritage. During a 2016 charity event in London, Goldberg embraced her Jewish roots.

She affirmed that “Goldberg” is indeed a family name that she holds dear, alongside her African-American heritage. Her mother, Emma Johnson, felt their original family name didn’t quite capture the essence needed for her daughter’s star potential.

Therefore, “Goldberg” was chosen, enriching her stage persona with a name that resonates with her background and the uniqueness that she brings to the entertainment world.

This decision has become a defining aspect of her legacy. Speaking of memorable names, another iconic figure who adopted a stage name is the “Rocket Man” himself, Elton John.

Elton John, the iconic singer, chose a stage name that mirrored the flamboyance of his stage presence. Born Reginald Kenneth Dwight, he would eventually emerge as the celebrated artist we recognize.

John once reflected on his transformation, stating, “When I became Elton John, it was like a new lease of life. I didn’t particularly like being Reg Dwight. It had too many unhappy memories. I hated the word ‘Reg’, anyway. It was just a horrible name. As soon as I was Elton, it was just great. It was like a new personality.”

The singer’s early life was overshadowed by his parents’ tumultuous relationship, oscillating between cold silences and fiery disputes. Sadly, his parents’ fights often centered around his upbringing.

His father, a Royal Air Force serviceman, was often absent, and his sporadic attempts to impose discipline on his son only fueled discord with John’s mother.

John believed their strained marriage persisted solely for his sake, a notion that contributed to his distress. Seeking solace, John would retreat to his bedroom, finding comfort in his records, comics, and dreams of emulating musical greats.

At 13, his parents divorced and found new partners, a change that John welcomed, though it did little to simplify his familial relationships. He maintained a closer bond with his mother, despite periods of estrangement. John acknowledges that his childhood remains a sensitive subject for him.

Prince Harry

Similarly, Prince Harry is universally recognized by his nickname. Known the world over, Harry was born with the regal name Henry Charles Albert David. It’s true—the prince who has won over countless admirers is, in fact, a Henry.

Prince Harry shared this tidbit in a light-hearted exchange with a young winner at the WellChild Awards. “My name is Henry too,” he revealed, “but for some reason, everyone calls me Harry.” This off-the-cuff remark offers a peek into the informal naming customs of the British royal family.

While “Henry” is used in official capacities, “Harry” is the name he commonly uses. For instance, in the announcement of his engagement to Meghan Markle, he was referred to as “His Royal Highness Prince Henry of Wales.”

This practice isn’t new; it harks back to medieval times. “Harry” has traditionally been a friendly nickname for “Henry,” used even by kings of old, such as the renowned Henry VIII. This blend of formality and familiarity is a charming aspect of royal tradition.

Similarly, in Hollywood, people often change names to connect more intimately with audiences. For some, it’s about having a name that resonates, that’s easy on the tongue, and memorable in the mind of the masses.

Charlie Sheen

Enter Charlie Sheen, a name that evokes both the allure of Hollywood and its attendant controversies. However, it is not the birth name of the actor. He entered the world as Carlos Irwin Estévez, son of the acclaimed actor Martin Sheen.

Charlie’s first foray into acting was at the tender age of nine, with a small part in the notable TV film, “The Execution of Private Slovik,” which featured his father. The differing surnames between father and son stem from Martin’s early struggles as an aspiring actor in New York.

Originally named Ramón Estevez, he encountered frequent mispronunciations of his name. Seeking a more accessible stage name, he honored two individuals he admired. Fulton J. Sheen was a charismatic American archbishop, while Robert Dale Martin, was a casting director at CBS.

Although he adopted “Martin Sheen” professionally, he never legally changed his birth name. In a family of performers, Charlie was the sole sibling to embrace his father’s theatrical surname. He also modified his first name to fit the Anglophone context of his career.

The reasons are as varied as the stars themselves. One common reason is the desire for privacy. A stage name can provide a layer of separation between the public persona and the private individual. For some, it helps to maintain some semblance of normalcy in their personal lives.

For celebrities, a name can be much more than just a label. It can influence their brand, shape their public image, and even play a role in their personal and professional journeys. As we’ve seen in the stories of these celebrities, the reasons for changing a name are as varied as the stars themselves.

For others, the quest is for resonance—a name that rolls off the tongue, lodges itself in the collective memory, and shines under the spotlight. It’s a name designed to emblazon billboards and embody the brand they envision.

Moreover, a name change can be a deliberate branding strategy. A new name can signal a fresh start, a transformation, or a shift in career direction. Such a change empowers celebrities to shape their image and influence public perception.

When she contacted the restaurant, the lady said that they don’t cater to vegans. It seemed like a rather reasonable request when she explained that she understood and just wanted to get some of the sides.

The employee then came back and said: “I don’t even know why vegan would even want to come to our restaurant anyway.” It wasn’t so much that they wouldn’t cater to vegans, which she didn’t appreciate. It was the fact that the woman was so rude to her.

During her candid conversation with Vanity Fair, Lizzo flat-out denied that she makes music for a”white audience.” Instead, the 34-year-old musician creates music that exemplifies her black experience. With a mix of genres flowing their Lizzo’s tunes, you can pick up on bits of hip hop, gospel, and R&B. She also has hit anthems like Good as Hell and About Damn Time that has skyrocketed to the top of the pop charts.

Lizzo has some concerns over the chart-topping songs because they were designed for a black audience but are so popular among whites. That is what “disturbs her the most.”

“This is probably the biggest criticism I’ve received, and it is such a critical conversation when it comes to black artists,” the singer said.

“When black people see a lot of white people in the audience, they think, ‘Well, this isn’t for me.

This is for them! The thing is, when a black artist reaches a certain level of popularity, it’s going to be a predominantly white crowd.”

The intelligent singer and the business woman added, “I am not making music for white people. I am a black woman. I am making music from my black experience.”

Lizzo was born Melissa Jefferson. She claims to create music “for me to heal myself (from) the experience we call life.”

The singer from Detroit knows that she is doing something powerful for young Black people. She wants there to be more love and self-love, as she said: “We need self-love and self-love anthems more than anybody.”

She added, “So am I making music for that girl right there who looks like me, who grew up in a city where she was underappreciated and picked on and made to feel unbeautiful?’” she asked before answering, “Yes.”

Lizzo also had a few choice words for the critics who are trying to paint her as a racist.

“It blows my mind when people say I’m not making music from a black perspective-how could I not do that as a black artist?”

Meanwhile, Kanye West, 45, made remarks about Lizzo’s weight on Fox News with Tucker Carlson. West said, “When Lizzo loses 10 pounds and announces it, the bots — that’s a term for like telemarketer callers on Instagram – they attack her for losing weight because the media wants to put out a perception that being overweight is the new goal when it’s actually unhealthy.

“Let’s get aside the fact of whether it’s fashion and vogue, which it’s not. Or if someone thinks she is attractive, to each his own. It’s actually clinically unhealthy, and for people to promote that… it’s demonic.”

Carlson pushed West to explain why he felt that this is being done to people of the Black race.

West had an answer in his back pocket.

“”It’s a genocide of the black race. They want to kill us in any way they can.”

About 35 years ago, when Tracy Pollan vowed that she’d be with Michael J. Fox “for better or for worse and in sickness and in health,” she meant every word.

Since her husband was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease only three years after they wed, Pollan stood by Fox and has been “there on the front lines” with him “every single day.”Teary-eyed, the retired star says of his devoted wife, “One of the things I’ll always love Tracy for is that at that moment, she didn’t blink.” Keep reading to learn more about the couple’s enviable bond!

But when he met Tracy Pollan, who played his girlfriend Ellen Reed on the award-winning comedy series that spanned seven seasons, it was game over.Pollan, now 63, and Fox, 62, were married in 1988 at the height of his career, just as his TV personality was transitioning into the film star, Marty McFly in the Back to the Future trilogy.

In 1991, the same year his comedy film Doc Holiday was released, the Emmy Award-winning actor, 29 at the time, was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease.

In November 2022, while accepting the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award, Fox recalled his painful journey with Parkinson’s disease.

“I was told I only had 10 years left to work. That was s***ty. That’s what happened. The hardest part of my diagnosis was grappling with the certainty of the diagnosis and the uncertainty of the situation,” Fox said. “I only knew it would get worse. The diagnosis was definite, the progress was indefinite and uncertain. My wife [Pollan] made it clear that she was with me for the duration. But my young son, Sam, didn’t know. He didn’t have a choice.”

The children
The couple share son Sam Michael, 34, twin daughters Aquinnah Kathleen and Schuyler Frances, 29, and Esmé Annabelle, 22.

“If I’m reaching for something, they’ll just do it and carry on,” he said of his children in an interview with Good Housekeeping (through People). “[They have learned] empathy, resilience, and also sorting out what’s important from what’s not, things like vanity.”

Fox shares a close relationship with his now adult children, who frequently make guest appearances on his Instagram account.

“Our children are beautiful, sensitive, intelligent, empathetic, independent, compassionate, adventurous, lovely people,” he captioned a Mother’s Day tribute to Pollan in May 2022. “That’s your fault. We all love you so much. Happy Mother’s Day.”

‘In sickness and in health’
In March 2023, the couple spoke with People about their continued support for one another and how they nurture their relationship.

“I think we really listen to each other; we are there for each other when we need each other,” Pollan said. “And then we also give each other space when that’s needed. Just feeling off of what’s needed at the moment and trying to be there.”

Adding to that sentiment, Fox chimed in saying, “Tracy gives our family everything that we need. Any good in our family, anything good that we do, comes from her.”

In early November 2023, the Teen Wolf star spoke on CBS Mornings and discussed how his loving wife has been his greatest champion for 35 years.

“It’s been great for me, I don’t know how it is for her,” Fox joked. “I love Tracy obviously and she’s an amazing person and has gone through a lot. I realize she has a life separate from me having Parkinson’s, from me being Alex Keaton or Marty McFly, she’s a person. I think that’s why it’s gone okay.”

The star, who voiced Chance on the 1993 family film Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey, also shared how Pollan continues to honor her wedding vows.

“I had no idea what to expect [since the diagnosis], and neither did she. She had indicated to me by saying, for better or for worse, in sickness and in health…She was able to get me through it, and go through it with me. And she has for 35 years.”

Fox adds, “She’s there in the front lines with me every single day. She never pretends to know as much as I know.”

Speaking with Today in 2020, Fox, who was overcome with emotion when talking about his Pollan, said: “One of the things I’ll always love Tracy for is that at that moment [of diagnosis], she didn’t blink.”

The multiple award-winning actor is the founder of the Michael J. Fox Foundation, which according to the organization’s website, has raised almost $2 billion towards finding a cure for Parkinson’s Disease, a progressive brain disorder.

As for Fox, his mind is still razor sharp.

“I’ll be survived by my reruns. That gave me a little bit of a dash of immortality,” adds the charming icon.

If you’ve ever tuned in to the popular ABC show “The View,” you may have noticed that the ladies on the panel aren’t exactly the warmest and most approachable individuals. Instead of fostering a positive environment, they often spread half-truths, promote their own far-left ideologies, engage in race-baiting, and make outrageous statements, especially about conservatives. It’s no wonder that the show’s ratings have been struggling, prompting ABC’s parent company, Disney, to consider selling the network.

While most shows would take this as an opportunity to reinvent themselves and improve their image, the ladies of “The View” seem determined to continue on their divisive path. The atmosphere is filled with acrimony, and they persistently promote questionable viewpoints.

Recently, Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi, one of America’s most recognizable pop-culture icons of the last two decades, appeared on Bravo Network’s “Watch What Happens Live” with Andy Cohen. During the interview, Cohen asked her about the rudest celebrity she has encountered throughout her time in the public eye. The answer she gave left Cohen and the audience shocked.

Liza expressed, “When I’m singing to an audience, I’m not just singing to an audience; I’m singing to you. What I want to say to the audience is— have you ever felt like this?

Because it’s what I’m going through now. I just want people to know that I’ve been through what they’ve been through.”

“The thing that strikes me the most in our conversations, it’s been how dedicated both of us our to our families,” Turner said. “So we look at these conversations and we both think it’s best for the happiness of each of us to live apart.”

While Turner and Nist will live separate lives, they don’t plan to forget the good times the two shared.

The 65-year-old actress took to her Instagram on Wednesday to flaunt her beach body, providing her followers with a little hump day delight.

Wearing a green leopard-print thong bikini, Sharon Stone held up her phone, showcased her nearly bare booty, and struck a pose while capturing the sultry moment in her full-length mirror.

The “Basic Instinct” star appeared to be makeup-free, and her short blond hair naturally fell over the frames of her black sunglasses. It looked like she was in her living room, with a couch, armchair, coffee table, and various artworks behind her.

Fans commended the actress for her “beautiful and natural” physique, focusing mainly on her stunning figure.

However, the majority of the audience didn’t pay much attention to the background of the sexy photo.

Comments like “Girl still got it ???☘️,” “Omg, don’t hurt em! ?❤️? Slaying!” and “Iconic!” flooded the comments section.

Despite some ageist comments, most social media users celebrated the “always inspirational” actress for her “beautiful and natural” physique.

“Sharon, you look fantastic at ANY age. Keep doing you and don’t listen to any haters. You look fantastic, fit, and healthy ❤️,” another supporter gushed.

Even her famous friends showered her with compliments.

It’s hard to believe, but the one and only Cher is 76 years old. Born on May 20, 1946 in California, the Goddess of Pop first rose to stardom after the Sonny & Cher 1965 hit, “I Got You Babe.”

Throughout her 50-year career, she’s starred in her own television show, sold over 100 million records, received countless awards, acted on Broadway, and toured solo around the world. She can easily be classified as one of the most successful entertainers in the world.

For as long as cameras have existed, those who earn their living in front of their lenses have striven to adapt, develop, and even experiment with their faces to defy the aging process.

We could write a never-ending article on all the stars of Hollywood and the music industry who have waged war on Mother Nature’s designs; the futility of their pioneering attempts; the lies told to cover up treatments; the strange diets; the horror stories born of plastic surgeries gone too far.

Of all the stars to have been in the spotlight long enough for the public to witness their transition from young to old, Cher is perhaps the one who sticks out the most.

Cher, 76, has had a very special life, having success as a worldwide music star as well as an actress. Through the years, she’s been married twice and been in relationships with many famous people.

Cher, who is known for dancing on stage in sky-high heels while wearing costumes that leave little to the imagination, credits her physique to a routine that includes the gym, following a plant-based and dairy-free diet, avoiding alcohol, and taking care of her skin.

”I exercise about five times a week because it’s something I’ve always done and I just enjoy it,” she told Hello! Magazine.

Although she admits she has to work twice as hard as others, she’s committed to maintaining a slimmer figure, but she doesn’t mind the extra work.

”When I was young I was a tomboy. I played sports. And I’m learning to surf right now. I like that kind of stuff, thank God.”

Cher also shared with Hello! Magazine that she doesn’t eat meat, and in her book Cher Forever Fit: The Lifetime Plan for Health, Fitness, and Beauty, she wrote that she tries to avoid food with high fat content. She also reportedly doesn’t eat cheese.

When it comes to alcohol, drugs, and smoking, Cher steers away.

”There are things I don’t like that are unhealthy, like drugs and drinking, so I never got into them to begin with,” she told Closer in 2013 and added:

”I smoked cigarettes for a while and I’d have done drugs had I liked them, but they didn’t agree with me. I’ll only drink three of four times a year too.”

As for her skincare routine, Cher doesn’t necessarily have one product that’s her go-to.

“My skincare routine is very eclectic. I don’t stick to one particular product, I just have things that I love from different people,” she told PEOPLE and continued:

”I have a friend, her name is Dr. Barbara Sturm, and she makes an eye cream and face wash that I love. I love Jan Marini products too. I also have Proactiv products that I love.”

The music iconic also makes sure to stay young by spending time with her boyfriend, the music producer Alexander Edwards, 36.

Last year, Cher revealed that she’d already introduced Edwards to the rest of her family, adding that “love doesn’t know math!”. Her comment was presumably made in reference to those questioning the large age gap between the two new lovebirds (Cher is 76, while her boyfriend is less than half that at 36).

According to Cher herself, she and Edwards met during Paris Fashion Week in 2022. We’ll not claim to be budding geniuses in mathematics, but that puts their relationship firmly yet in Honeymoon territory.

Even so, there were plenty of fans who expressed their delight at seeing Cher so happy. The 76-year-old also directly spoke on the age-gap facing the couple, stating: “Love doesn’t know math, it sees [red heart emojis]. Rinpoche told me ‘some ppl [sic] meet, others ‘recognise’.”
