There were tiny little pockets of time in Sandra’s day when she wasn’t busy cleaning her boss’ palatial house. In these tiny little pockets of time, she forgot the pain in her young body, the heartbreak of being abandoned by her boyfriend, the sorrow of being an orphan all these years…

All of that ceasedto exist, and she only saw the serene image of two pink hands and feet and a face so delicate and divine it broke her heart. “Amelia!” Sandra’s lips would quiver, uttering the name of her baby girl, who was just 4 months old.

Sandra’s world had turned on its head since the day she learned she was pregnant. Her boyfriend of three years walked out on her, saying he wasn’t cut out to be a father.

Sandra had never met anyone in this world who was father material. Or mother material, for that matter. For as long as she could remember, she felt tossed around from one foster home to another, never making any real friends or feeling at home.

There were years when she was angry at the world, unwilling to be a kind, vulnerable human to anyone in her path. But that anger got older and paler, and when Amelia came along, it completely melted away.

“Promise me you’ll watch over her. Promise me, so I can go…”

“I can always be the mother and father I never had… that will be my closure,” she thought as she worked the vacuum cleaner on the expensive rug that covered the marble floor in her employer’s home.

It was only her third day at work, and it already looked like she was getting on Mr. Russell’s nerves.

“What do you think you’re doing, miss?” His feeble but angry voice jolted her back to the present moment.

“You’re using the wrong vacuum cleaner on the wrong rug… AGAIN!”

Sandra turned red with embarrassment and shame and ran up to the store room in the attic to correct her error.

Mr. Russell’s angry words continued to chase after her. “If you’re going to be distracted the whole time, I suggest you look for another job! I’d like to see who else would hire someone as sloppy as you!”

Sandra couldn’t shut out the man’s voice or stop her eyes from tearing up. The fact that she couldn’t find the right cleaning instrument up there wasn’t helping either. She rummaged through the large storage closet and bit her tongue as a pile of mops and buckets toppled onto the floor, making a loud noise.

“What’s that noise?” Mr. Russell yelled impatiently and started climbing the stairs to the attic.

Sandra was nervously putting things back in place when she noticed something that fell off the shelves.

It was an old family photo album, and it landed open on a picture that brought goosebumps all over Sandra’s skin.

In a daze, she picked up the album and took a closer look at the photo, her eyes widening and tearing up every second.

“Is that… me?” Sandra wondered out loud and fainted into the chair behind her.

When she finally got a hold of herself again, she saw Mr. Russell, who had been standing in a corner of the room the whole time.

Only this time, his voice had softened, and there were tears in his eyes.

“Cassandra? Is that really you? You… do look just like… your father!” the older man wiped his face.

Mr. Russell looked at the young woman in a new light and could clearly see traces of his best friend Matthew, his big-hearted fellow soldier who had died tragically in a fire several years ago.

“M-My father? You knew him?”

Mr. Russell collapsed into the chair behind him and covered his mouth, his eyes reliving the horror, the pain, and the promise of the past…

It turns out that Matthew and Mr. Russell, or Matt and Ray, as they lovingly called each other, had been the thickest of friends during their years in the army. Ray was an orphan and had no family waiting for him to return, while Matt was a lucky man, married to a beautiful woman who wrote to him every day.

“Ray, she wrote to me again today… and look! She finally sent me a picture of my baby girl! I named her ‘Cassandra.’ Beautiful, isn’t she?”

Ray had looked at the picture and felt his partner’s joy in his own heart. Without saying a word, Ray blessed that bright-looking little child in the picture a hundred times.

But fate had its own plans. The very next day, Matthew was caught in a fire at the warehouse that he was assigned to surveil.

Fighting to speak in his final moments of pain, his weak hand placed the same photo of his daughter into Ray’s hands.

“My wife… tell her I love her. Tell her I’m going to love her from up there, too. And remember, Ray? You said you didn’t have anyone to go home to… well, now you do. My daughter… promise me you’ll watch over her. Promise me, so I can go…”

That last sob of his dying friend still echoed in Mr. Russell’s ears.

“I’m so sorry, Cassandra. I wrote to your mother. I looked for her… and for you. But when I returned from service a year later, both of you were gone without a trace… All I could find out was that your mother had driven you to a different city wanting to start a new life for your sake.”

Sandra burst into tears as she recollected pieces of the rest of the story. She was only three years old back then, and she remembered her mother driving her somewhere.

The skies were golden, her mother was singing and hiding her tears all along, and just as they reached a city-like place with buildings and lights again, a blinding flash of light dashed towards them, and Sandra heard her mother’s voice calling her name for the very last time.

“Cassandra…” she had said, and years later, Mr. Russell’s voice carried the same heaviness as he called that name.

It was a miracle that after all these years, life allowed Ray to fulfill his promise. And to Sandra (or Cassandra, as she insisted on being called ever since), it was a blessing to feel the presence of a father figure in her life.

For the rest of his years, Ray did his best to make up for lost time with his best friend’s daughter. He took Cassandra and her baby daughter in and provided them with every luxury he could afford. When it was Ray’s time to go, he left all that he had earned on earth to Cassandra and Amelia, the family that was gifted to him by an incredible friend.

While he landed a historic Academy Award for the film, the most important would be his stint on “The Lost Man.” It changed the actor’s life forever, as it was where he met his future wife, Joanna Shimkus.

Sadly, Poitier passed away last year at the age of 94. He and Shimkus had been married for 45 years when he passed away. It was revealed on his death certificate that he passed away from heart failure, dementia, and prostate cancer.

Poitier passed away surrounded by his family and friends and spent his last day the same way. His children mentioned that they were grateful that they got to spend time with their father before he passed away. They also said that to them, he was not a star but rather a husband and father. They said:

“He is our guiding light who lit up our lives with infinite love and wonder. His smiles were healing, his hugs the warmest refuge, and his laughter was infectious.”

About Joanna Shimkus

Poitier wed Shimkus in 1976, over ten years since divorcing his first wife, Juanita Hardy, in 1965. The couple stood the test of time, having been married for over four decades.

Born in Canada, Shimkus began her career in 1964 through “All About Loving.” She then had a couple of other projects until 1972, when she decided to take a long break from acting.

Her Acting Career

She did not have any projects under her name until 2010 when she appeared on “Yard Sale” and then “The Force” in 2018. Ultimately, it showed that she took a break from acting to focus on her family.

In 1972, she gave birth to her and Poitier’s first daughter Anika before giving birth to their daughter Sydney the following year. Both children have followed in their footsteps in the industry.

A Passion More Than A Job

Anika directed “Black Irish,” where Shimkus was an executive producer as well. Meanwhile, Sydney appeared in “Veronica Mars” and Quentin Tarantino’s “Death Proof.”

Admittedly, Shimkus did not think acting would be her lifelong gig. Before marrying Poitier, she got into the industry because she believed it was “better than being in an office.”

Loving Her Work

In the end, she continues to act because it’s something she enjoys doing. To her, it is not necessarily something she has to do to make ends meet, especially with her children all grown up and with their budding careers.

The Love of Her Life

Despite accounts of Poitier’s infidelity during his first marriage, he and Shimkus remained a happy couple up until his passing in January 2022. Speaking about how they’ve made it work, he once said:

“There is one key ingredient my wife has helped me to recognize over the years, and that is the importance of articulating love for one another on a daily basis.”

The couple shared a beautiful union for the time that they were together and when speaking about Poitier, Shimkus had only lovely things to say about her long-time partner. Gushing about him, Shimkus lovingly said:

“He is the most wonderful, generous, kind, honest man with the most integrity I’ve ever known in my life.”

She also recalled their wedding day, where their daughters were flower girls, and said that being in an interracial relationship with Poitier was never an issue for them because she thought: “[They] were just destined to be together.”

About Sidney Poitier

Meanwhile, Poitier, born February 20, 1927, was an actor, director, and producer. Aside from being the first African American to win an Oscar, he is also considered the first Black movie star.

He was born prematurely in the US while his parents were on vacation from the Bahamas. He grew up on Cat Island, Bahamas, and returned to the US as a teenager to enlist in the army during World War II.

Venturing into Acting

After a brief stint in a medical unit, he applied to the American Negro Theatre in New York. He did not make the cut due to his accent, so he worked on his enunciation and went back six months later.

Being Rewarded for His Work

In 2009, he was awarded the US Presidential Medal of Freedom, and his life has been immortalized in several books like “This Life,” “The Measure of a Man: A Spiritual Autobiography,” and “Life Beyond Measure: Letters to My Great-Granddaughter.”

By the end of his life, Poitier spent most of his time with his family. He would often reunite with his large brood, including his wife, ex-wife, and 27 of his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and godchildren.

Poitier died at the age of 94 on January 6, 2022, at his home in Beverly Hills, California. He left behind his daughters and his wife. He was very proud of his daughters and said that they were his greatest achievement.

He said he invested in the planet by bringing six children into the world and said that he busted with pride that he gets to call his daughters his own. He was also proud of his wife, who celebrated her 79th birthday on October 30, 2022.
