The crash occurred on the A-52 in the province of Zamora. The road in Spain is a key route taken by drivers leaving northern Portugal.

âMuch more than an amazing player, with almost 50 internationalizations for the National A Team, Diogo Jota was an extraordinary person, respected by all teammates and opponents, someone with an infectious joy and a reference in the community itself.
âOn my behalf, and on behalf of the Portuguese Football Federation, I express my deepest condolences to the family and friends of Diogo and AndrĂ© Silva, as well as Liverpool FC and FC Penafiel, the clubs where, respectively, lined up the players.
âThe Portuguese Football Federation has already asked UEFA for a minuteâs silence, this Thursday, before the match of our national team with Spain, in the womenâs European Championship.
âLost to two champs. The disappearance of Diogo and Andre Silva represent irreparable losses for Portuguese football and we will do everything to, daily, honor their legacyâ.
Jota posted frequently on Instagram in the months leading up to his tragic death, penning celebratory messages after winning both the Premier League with Liverpool and the Nations League with Portugal.
After helping the Reds claim their second Premier League title, and 20th top flight honour in total, he shared a series of photographs from the final day and trophy parade with the caption: âNo 20. Meant to be. #YNWA.â
One of photographs saw Jota surrounded by friends and family as he celebrated the title triumph at Anfield in May, pictured with Cardoso and his three young children.
Earlier this week, Jota sent Cardoso what proved to be a final public message on Instagram after his wife wrote âmy dream came trueâ following their wedding.
